Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation

The Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation (CVMF) was created in December of 2001 to support education, scholarship, and service programs that improve animal health and welfare in Colorado. The involvement of veterinarians makes CVMF unique, allowing the foundation to make the broadest impact on animal health and welfare, and to offer services and insights that no other group can. In short, the foundation exists to make Colorado a better place for animals and people.

In April of 2003, CVMF was asked to develop the CO SART program on behalf of the citizens of Colorado. CVMF and the veterinary profession are very committed to strong and effective animal emergency management programs for our state!  Since then, CVMF has expended its role in animal emergency management to not only CO SART, but support for the Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps, support of the State Emergency Operations Center, Biodefense and Zoonoses outreach through the Rocky Mountain Regional Center of Excellence on Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Disease (based at CSU), and taking a strong role in helping network similar state programs across the nation.

The Harrison Center for Animals:

On January 1, 2007, CVMF and Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital (HMAH) merged.  CVMF, Colorado Veterinary Associations and HMAH management all are housed at the newly remodeled Harrison Center for Animals.  In addition to the veterinary facilities on the main floor, the Harrison Center for Animals provides office, classroom and conferrence room space on second floor, helping create a dynamic resource for veterinary medicine and animal welfare in our state.

Your support is needed for all CVMF programs based at the

The Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation has a number of dynamic programs that benefit both animals and people, including:
  • Controlling Pet Overpopulation: The foundation promotes responsible pet ownership and works to prevent unwanted pet births through the Community Pet Sterilization Grant Program. This initiative subsidizes pet sterilization in rural Colorado through partnerships that bring together local veterinarians and animal care professionals, helping to create community based solutions.
  • Promoting the Human-Animal Bond: The Colorado Pet Heroes program celebrates the love and dedication that pets and humans share. Three Colorado pets and one extraordinary person are recognized each year at a public event that acknowledges a pet hero, a distinguished service animal, a human hero for pets, and a pet that epitomizes the enrichment of the human spirit through their love and friendship.
  • Providing Veterinary Medical Care for Pets whose owners need assistance: In 2007, CVMF and Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital merged to create a dynamic partnership housed at the newly remodeled Harrison Center for Animals in central Denver.  Please visit the Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital site to learn more about this tremendous program!
  • Supporting Animal Health and Welfare Education: CVMF is working in partnership with veterinary associations, animal care and control professionals, government agencies, and academic institutions to support programs that enhance the knowledge of both professionals and the public concerning animal health and welfare issues. Your donation to CVMF will help create the capacity to bring all of Colorado together in supporting these efforts.
